Island Hopping in Bocas del Toro: A Tropical Paradise

Bocas del Toro, Panama, is an archipelago teeming with diverse islands, each offering a unique experience. From overwater bungalows to secluded beaches and thriving surf breaks, this Caribbean gem has something for everyone. Join us as we recount our island-hopping adventure, exploring the best of Bocas del Toro.

Isla Carenero: Overwater Serenity

Our journey began on Isla Carenero, a tranquil island just a short boat ride from the mainland. We settled into our overwater bungalow at Cosmic Crab, a budget-friendly option with stunning views. The island's laid-back atmosphere was immediately apparent, with a focus on relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty. The reliable Starlink internet was a welcome bonus!

Beyond our bungalow, Isla Carenero offered a charming overwater restaurant, a refreshing pool, and easy access to the Marina Kyo Carino. The island's small size made it easy to explore on foot, revealing local life and hidden gems.

Exploring Local Life and Hidden Beaches

Walking around Isla Carenero, we discovered a blend of local residences and inviting hotels, showcasing the island's unique character. The coastal walks reminded us of other Caribbean destinations, with picturesque restaurants and deserted beaches dotting the shoreline. Bocas del Toro truly offers a beach for every preference.

We also stumbled upon several surf schools and rental shops, highlighting Bocas del Toro's popularity as a surfing destination. The waves crashing against the coral reefs created ideal conditions for surfers of all levels.

Red Frog Beach: A Wild Encounter

Next, we ventured to Bastimentos Island, home to the renowned Red Frog Beach. The island's wild, mangrove-lined shores offered a dramatic entrance. After paying the $5 entrance fee for the protected area, we were greeted by the vibrant red frogs that give the beach its name.

Red Frog Beach itself was a striking contrast to the other beaches we visited. Its wide expanse of sand and powerful waves made it a haven for surfers, while the red flag served as a reminder of the strong currents. We enjoyed exploring the beach and taking in the stunning scenery.

Unfortunately, the sandflies were a downside to this beautiful beach. We highly recommend bringing insect repellent to avoid the itchy bites.

Dining and Drinks in Bocas Del Toro

Throughout our island hopping, we enjoyed delicious and affordable meals. On Isla Carenero, we dined at BB's, a popular restaurant known for its happy hour and budget-friendly prices. On Bastimentos, we found refuge from the rain at Palma, a cool resort with a beach bar and restaurant.

Local beers were readily available for around $2.50, while cocktails like margaritas could be found for $7 during happy hour.

Reflecting on the Islands

Bocas del Toro offered a fascinating contrast between its two main island groups. The San Blas Islands, with their untouched beauty and indigenous Kuna population, provided a remote Caribbean escape. Bocas del Toro, on the other hand, presented a vibrant mix of cultures, from Afro-Caribbean to expat communities, catering to a diverse range of travelers.

While our time in Panama was short, we were captivated by its beauty and diversity. From the volcanic landscapes of the mainland to the idyllic islands of Bocas del Toro, Panama has left a lasting impression, and we can’t wait to return and explore more.
