Montenegro's Coastal Gems: Exploring Budva's Charm and Kotor's Bay

Budva: Montenegro's Coastal Hotspot

Our Montenegro adventure led us to Budva, the country's most popular coastal town. After a challenging search for parking, we lucked out with a spot near the Old Town, allowing us to immerse ourselves in Budva's historic charm.

The Old Town, reminiscent of Dubrovnik but with a more manageable price tag, boasts narrow alleyways, ancient brick buildings, and city walls offering breathtaking views. We started our day with a delicious and affordable burek from a local bakery, a perfect way to fuel up before exploring.

Walking Budva's City Walls

For just €2, we strolled along Budva's city walls, enjoying panoramic views of the town, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding landscape. Unlike the crowded walls of Dubrovnik, we had the place almost to ourselves, making the experience even more special.

The walls offer a unique perspective on the Old Town's architecture and the lives of the people who reside within. It's a living museum, showcasing centuries of history and offering a glimpse into Montenegro's rich past.

Island Escape to Sveti Nikola

A short and affordable boat trip transported us to Sveti Nikola, Montenegro's largest island, often referred to as "Hawaii." While much of the beach was occupied by paid sunbeds, we found a secluded cove with crystal-clear water, perfect for a refreshing dip.

Be warned, the rocks in the cove can be sharp, so water shoes are recommended. Exploring the island's fortress ruins added another layer of intrigue to our island adventure.

Dining with a Twist

Lunch at the Old Fisherman's Club offered a unique blend of British pub fare and local cuisine. We sampled "pub-style" Ćevapi, a delicious twist on the traditional Balkan dish.

While prices were higher than in other parts of Montenegro, the quality and unique menu made it a worthwhile experience. The marina area near the Old Town offered a more refined dining experience compared to the bustling beach further down the coast.

The Allure of Sveti Stefan

A short bus ride from Budva brought us to Sveti Stefan, a luxurious island resort. While access to the island itself is restricted to guests, the views from the public beach are stunning.

The unique history of Sveti Stefan, from a 15th-century fortress to a royal retreat and now a high-end resort, adds to its allure. Even without stepping foot on the island, the experience was captivating.

On to the Bay of Kotor

Our final destination was the breathtaking Bay of Kotor. We found a fantastic campsite with unparalleled views of the bay and the charming old town of Kotor.

Waking up to such a view was a highlight of our Montenegro road trip, and it set the stage for our exploration of Kotor and the surrounding area.

Conclusion

From the vibrant beaches of Budva to the tranquil beauty of the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro's coastline offers a diverse range of experiences. With a mix of historical charm, natural beauty, and affordable adventures, Montenegro is a must-visit destination.
