Escape to Okinawa's Kerama Islands: A Tropical Paradise in Japan
Okinawa's Kerama Islands: A Tropical Escape
Forget bustling Tokyo; Okinawa offers a different side of Japan. Journey south to discover the Kerama Islands, a tropical archipelago boasting crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and pristine white-sand beaches. This travel guide will take you through our adventure, from navigating an unexpected tsunami warning to exploring the hidden gems of these idyllic islands.
A Tsunami Warning and an Unexpected Turn
Our journey began with a flight from Tokyo to Okinawa, followed by a short walk to the port for our boat tour to the Kerama Islands National Park. Excitement turned to anxiety as a tsunami warning flashed across our phones. The ferry turned back, and we found ourselves amidst a flurry of activity as locals and tourists alike heeded the warning. Luckily, the tsunami's impact on Okinawa was minimal, and the warning was lifted a few hours later. This experience underscored the importance of heeding safety warnings and highlighted the region's preparedness for such events.
Tokashiki Island: A Caribbean Dream in Japan
The following day, we successfully embarked on our journey to Tokashiki Island. A short ferry ride and a quick bus trip brought us to Aharen Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand fringed by turquoise waters. The vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life make it a snorkeler's paradise. We rented beach chairs and umbrellas and settled in to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
Exploring the Island's Hidden Gems
Beyond Aharen Beach, Tokashiki Island offers a variety of hidden coves and secluded beaches. A short walk revealed stunning rock formations, calm, clear waters perfect for swimming, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the coastline. We discovered that Tokashiki isn't the only island worth exploring in the Kerama archipelago. Zamami Island, with its diverse accommodation options, also beckons.
Island Life and Local Cuisine
The laid-back island life is a welcome contrast to the fast pace of mainland Japan. Local restaurants offer delicious Okinawan cuisine, including the unique "Yaki Soba" with fish skin. The absence of beach vendors adds to the unspoiled feel of the islands.
Accommodation and Transportation
We found affordable accommodation in Naha, Okinawa's capital, for $84 a night. While public transportation within Okinawa may not be as frequent as in other parts of Japan, taxis and rental cars are available. However, international driver's licenses are not valid in Japan.
Tips for Planning Your Trip

- Consider visiting Zamami Island for more accommodation options.
- Rent a beach umbrella and chairs for a comfortable beach experience.
