Tagaytay Ridge Cruise Excursion from Manila: A Breathtaking View Worth the Ride

Manila offers a plethora of exciting excursions for cruise passengers, and one of the most popular choices is a trip to Tagaytay Ridge. Known for its stunning views of Taal Volcano and its cooler climate, Tagaytay Ridge promises a refreshing escape from the bustling city. This in-depth review details my recent experience on a Norwegian Cruise Line excursion to Tagaytay Ridge, offering insights, tips, and an honest assessment of whether this long journey is truly worth it.

A Rocky Start: Embarkation and Initial Delays

My Tagaytay Ridge adventure began with a less-than-ideal embarkation process. Due to a delayed arrival into Manila from the previous port, our scheduled docking time was pushed back. Communication from the cruise line regarding this delay was lacking, leading to confusion and frustration among passengers waiting for their excursions. We were initially told to meet at 9:30 am, but ended up sitting in the crowded theater for nearly an hour before finally disembarking around 10:50 am.

The disorganization continued with further delays due to customs clearance. The lack of proactive communication from Norwegian Cruise Line about adjusting meeting times added to the already stressful situation. Despite the rocky start, we eventually boarded our tour bus, grateful for the strong air conditioning that provided a welcome respite from the Manila heat.

The Journey to Tagaytay Ridge: Long Rides and Police Escorts

The excursion involved a significant amount of travel time, approximately five and a half hours round trip. The drive itself was an experience, with a police escort on motorcycles leading the way through traffic. This was apparently necessary due to ongoing freeway construction and heavy congestion on the back roads. Our tour guide, Lori, provided interesting commentary along the way, sharing facts about the Philippines, such as the astounding number of islands—over 7,600!

We made a brief stop at a vibrant fruit stand, offering a glimpse into the local produce. However, the stop was shortened to allow for more time at our main destination: the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay Ridge.

Taal Vista Hotel: Breathtaking Views and a Delicious Buffet

Arriving at the Taal Vista Hotel was the highlight of the excursion. The panoramic view of Taal Volcano and the surrounding landscape was simply breathtaking. As the first bus to arrive, we had ample time to enjoy the buffet lunch, which offered a diverse selection of dishes, including vegetarian options. The food was fresh, hot, and flavorful, and the outdoor seating provided the perfect setting to savor the stunning scenery.

The hotel itself overlooks the infamous volcano island, which was evacuated a few years ago due to a sudden eruption. Lori shared the island's history, explaining that it was once inhabited by 2,000 people and animals, with no electricity or running water, accessible only by speedboat.

Exploring Manila: A Glimpse into History and Culture

After lunch, we continued our journey, making a stop at the historic Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church, home to a unique 200-year-old organ made of bamboo pipes. The church visit was followed by a short stop at Rizal Park in Manila, named after national hero José Rizal. The park was beautifully illuminated at night, but our limited time prevented us from exploring it fully.

Throughout the tour, I learned fascinating facts about the Philippines, including the influence of American colonization, which resulted in English becoming one of the national languages. This made communication and navigation easy, with street signs and school subjects taught in English.

Final Thoughts: Was it Worth the Ride?

Despite the initial organizational hiccups and the extensive travel time, the Tagaytay Ridge excursion was ultimately a rewarding experience. The breathtaking views of Taal Volcano and the surrounding landscape were undoubtedly the highlight, making the long bus ride worthwhile. The delicious buffet lunch at the Taal Vista Hotel and the glimpses into Filipino history and culture added to the overall positive experience.

If you're considering this excursion, be prepared for a long day on the bus. However, if you're willing to endure the journey, you'll be rewarded with unforgettable views and a unique cultural experience.

Tips for Future Travelers:

  • Bring your own toilet paper, as it's not always provided in public restrooms.
  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.
  • Dress in layers, as the bus air conditioning can be strong.
  • Be prepared for potential traffic delays.

Overall, the Tagaytay Ridge excursion from Manila offers a memorable glimpse into the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Philippines. While the long bus ride requires patience, the stunning views and unique experiences make it a worthwhile adventure for cruise passengers seeking a taste of something truly special.
